True or false: the responsibility for road safety is entirely the job of engineers, designers, law enforcement and EMS professionals?

False! While it is true those professionals work very hard to ensure safe travel on the roads, every person who walks, drives, rides a motorcycle or bikes has a responsibility to themselves and the others with whom they share the road.

Education plays a key role in helping the public understand what they should and should not do when driving. Increased education leads to a change in habits and ultimately a decline in the number of fatalities on Maryland roads.

While education plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of life of Maryland citizens and visitors, it must be combined with effective enforcement efforts and strong legislation. By educating motorists that traffic laws are important and will be upheld, motor vehicle fatalities and injuries are prevented.  In fact, education and enforcement are coupled in several safety campaigns that focus on seat belt use, impaired driving and aggressive driving.

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) houses the Office of Traffic and Safety (OTS) and its Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO), where a highly experienced team of safety advocates and managers coordinate statewide and local traffic safety campaigns that include Click It or Ticket, Checkpoint Strikeforce and other impaired driving prevention programs, as well as the Just Drive campaign.

MHSO oversees a network of community traffic safety programs (one located in every county) and the City of Baltimore. Click here to contact your local community traffic safety program coordinator.

The Maryland Highway Safety Office also provides grants to eligible traffic safety projects sponsored by non-profit or not-for-profit organizations.  For more information   e-mail mhso@sha.state.md.us or call 410-787-4050.
