Unfortunately, despite the best safety education programs and roadways that are safely designed, constructed and maintained, traffic crashes still occur. Most, if not all, occur when someone does not obey the law. Law enforcement is a very necessary tool in the traffic safety cause. Police officers protect against those who simply do not follow traffic safety laws and as a result put us all at risk.
A wake-up call
Sometimes being pulled over and being issued a warning or citation is a “teachable moment,” and reminds us of our responsibilities on the road. Need a reason to obey the law: to go the speed limit, stop at that red light, wear your seat belt? Choose Safety for Life partners have more than 3,000 of them – the number of people who have been killed in traffic crashes over the last five years.
State, county and municipal law enforcement agencies statewide work alongside highway safety partnering agencies to enforce Maryland’s traffic laws during regular patrols, as well as specialized mobilization efforts such as Click It or Ticket and You Drink. You Drive. You Lose (Checkpoint Strikeforce). These are two examples of the many efforts conducted during the year with the ultimate goal of reducing motor vehicle injuries and fatalities on Maryland roadways.
