At the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) and local departments of transportation throughout the State, safety is the number one priority.  As SHA recognizes the 100 year anniversary of modern road building in Maryland, we want you to live to be 100 like we are. There is a renewed focus  the service and safety with the theme – Customer Driven – Now More Than Ever.

The focus on safety within engineering begins with designing, building and maintaining safe roadways. Transportation engineers use design principles that are proven to be safe and reliable. National standards are used for signs and traffic markings to provide consistency for the traveling public. The Maryland Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, as well as counties and municipalities, are the agencies responsible for engineering safe and reliable transportation systems in Maryland.  Together, they are partnering in the Maryland Strategic Highway Safety Plan: Destination Saving Lives.

Engineers continue to look for new and innovative ways to make transportation safer – an example in recent years is the rumble strip that deters vehicles from departing the roadway.  Countdown signals are technological developments that provide pedestrians with the exact number of seconds available to cross the roadway.  SHA’s Coordinated Highway Action Response Team (CHART) deploys emergency traffic patrols to incident scenes and stranded motorists.

Do you have a safety concern on a State road, numbered routes in Maryland? SHA maintains all numbered routes in Maryland, with the exception of any road in the City of Baltimore or any toll roads, which are owned by the Maryland Transportation Authority [MdTA].
