Message from:
Governor Martin O’Malley
Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown
The number of motor vehicle crashes, deaths, and associated injuries occurring on our highways continue to take a devastating toll on our citizens and visitors to our great State. More than 600 people die on our roads every year, more than the number of homicides Maryland suffers annually. This unacceptable reality poses a great challenge because every lost life leaves families torn, communities changed, dreams destroyed. Startlingly, 93 percent of all crashes are due to driver error, and thus completely preventable. The Choose Safety for Life campaign offers an alternative – it guides Maryland to creating safer drivers, pedestrians and cyclists and a safer network of roadways.
Improving public safety in every part of our State is a top priority of the O’Malley-Brown Administration. We strongly believe that one of the greatest responsibilities of government is to protect its people, but government cannot do it alone. Because every Maryland citizen benefits from safer travels, we encourage you to thoroughly visit this website, take the Driver Improvement Program, review the rules of the road and talk to your friends, coworkers and neighbors about traffic to help carry out this life-saving mission. As we apply the best solutions to our most critical highway safety issues, we count on your continued support as we move closer to our ultimate destination: saving lives. |
